An inspiring story of one woman's journey through heartbreaking loss to renewal and new purpose.
In 2008, inspirational surgeon Chris O'Brien published his bestselling memoir of his battle with brain cancer, NEVER SAY DIE. But he wasn't the only person in the O'Brien household with a powerful story to tell. Since Chris passed away in 2009, his wife Gail has gone on a journey of her own from a busy surgeon's wife and mother of a picture-perfect family to a widow in her mid-50s, grieving not only her husband but also her son Adam, who died as a result of epilepsy a short time after Chris's death.
Yet in the midst of her grief, Gail discovered resolve and strength deep within herself. When Chris was alive, Gail was the woman behind the great man. But after his death, she stepped forward to make her own mark on the world. While coming to terms with both a public and private loss, Gail took on Chris's legacy as steward of the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse cancer centre, navigating the often bruising politics of boards and committees to ensure his vision was realised. She also went back to work as a physio after being out of the workforce for 20 years, while still holding her shattered family together. She reinvented herself and found that she could survive and even thrive in a world without her soul mate.
A moving, inspiring, deeply poignant and often joyous story of family, love and loss - and ultimately, about finding your purpose in the world.

This is Gail eBook Juliette O'Brien Reviews
A very personal insight into the admiration, love, suffering, grief and resilience of a remarkable family.
Good read
Great book if you lost a spouse to cancer at a young age.
A sensitively written, but emotionally charged read. I found it rather subjective in some areas which should have been dealt with objectively. It felt like I was privy to someone's therapy sessions in parts.
Having read her husbands autobiography this added to both their stories. Worth reading but read his first.
THIS book is an inspiration of courage, faith, and love., Gail writes in a manner that makes you part of the lives of this family, its not always a book of joy as it covers so much heartache and detail and yet it involves you in a way that inspires you to live your life in a manner that you can be proud of.. Chris. was truly a good example, his thoughts and way of living bring us much in the way of wisdom. I totally recommend this book., it deals with the life and the experiences of the spirit that Gail experienced after his death and gives one much to think about and believe..,
The book is a credit to Gail and to Julienne.
This is a really moving memoir about the life of Gail O'brien, the wife of Chris O'Brien -a well known head and neck surgeon in Sydney. It showed her as a strong, compassionate and courageous woman who survived great personal tragedy - nursing her husband through his final illness with cancer and the death not long after of her eldest son. In addition she took on the politics and beaurocracy to help establish her husband's dream of a world class cancer centre and the resulting establishment is a credit to his vision. A member of my family has been treated there and it really is a compassionate, first class centre.. The book is very sensitively written by her daughter Juliet. I would also recommend reading Chris O'Brien's biography "never Say Die"as a lot of it ties in with Gail's story.
